The tree lighting in late November marks the official beginning of the Melbourne Christmas Festival. This free event draws a crowd, so we recommend arriving early to ensure a prime spot for witnessing all the magic.

Crown Christmas River Show

The tradition has been running since 1956, with a new secret theme unveiled each November. The 2025 display marked the windows' 70th anniversary with A Playful LEGO Christmas Story, built from nearly 500,000 LEGO bricks, and the 2026 theme will be revealed when the windows open in November.

New Year’s Eve in Melbourne

In recent years, the Victorian Government has also made all trains, trams and buses free from 6pm on 31 December until 6am on New Year's Day.
