The tree lighting in late November marks the official beginning of the Melbourne Christmas Festival. This free event draws a crowd, so we recommend arriving early to ensure a prime spot for witnessing all the magic.

The tradition has been running since 1956, with a new secret theme unveiled each November. The 2025 display marked the windows' 70th anniversary with A Playful LEGO Christmas Story, built from nearly 500,000 LEGO bricks, and the 2026 theme will be revealed when the windows open in November.

One of the most cherished Christmas traditions in Melbourne is the nationally-renowned Carols by Candlelight. Held at the Sidney Myer Music Bowl, this enchanting event brings the community together under the sprawling starry night sky every year on Christmas Eve.

New Year’s Eve in Melbourne

Christmas may get the decorations, but New Year's Eve is when Melbourne truly comes alive. Hundreds of thousands of people pour into the city each year for one of Australia's biggest celebrations, capped by a midnight fireworks display launched from rooftops right across the CBD.

Because the fireworks fire from the city skyline itself, you don't need to squeeze into one single vantage point. Where to Watch the Fireworks Near Dorsett Melbourne

Staying at Dorsett Melbourne puts you within walking distance of some of the best spots in the city. In recent years, free celebration zones have included Flagstaff Gardens, around a ten-minute walk from the hotel, and the Docklands waterfront, about fifteen minutes away.

Getting Home After Midnight

Public transport runs all night on New Year's Eve, with extra trains after midnight and City Loop stations open late. In recent years, the Victorian Government has also made all trains, trams and buses free from 6pm on 31 December until 6am on New Year's Day. Check Transport Victoria closer to the night for the current year's arrangements.

Of course, if you're staying at Dorsett Melbourne, the best route home is on foot. Being minutes from the action means the night ends on your schedule, not the timetable's.
