Operating since 2006, the gondola service links Tung Chung, the gateway town on Lantau Island, with the Ngong Ping Plateau, a tranquil highland area steeped in Buddhist heritage and natural beauty.
The cable car journey itself is an attraction in its own right. Completed in 1993, the statue was designed to symbolise the harmonious relationship between humanity, nature, and religion. Visitors willing to climb the 268 steps to the statue's base are rewarded with sweeping views across the Ngong Ping Plateau, the surrounding mountains, and the coastline beyond. Po Lin Monastery, one of Hong Kong's most important Buddhist institutions, sits at the foot of the Tian Tan Buddha statue. Founded in 1906, the monastery features ornate temple halls, incense-filled courtyards, and a vegetarian restaurant renowned for its traditional Buddhist cuisine.
